Africa’s digital payment landscape has entered a new phase with the announcement of a strategic partnership between Flutterwave and American Express. The initiative, spearheaded by Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga ‘GB’ Agboola, introduces enhanced payment capabilities for Nigerian online merchants, marking a significant advancement in cross-border commerce.

This collaboration enables Flutterwave’s e-commerce merchants in Nigeria to accept payments from American Express Card Members across personal, business, and corporate card categories. Looking ahead, Flutterwave CEO Agboola has outlined plans for geographic expansion, targeting markets in Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana, and Uganda, underscoring the company’s commitment to regional growth.

Flutterwave’s market presence is evidenced by its impressive transaction volume, having processed more than 630 million transactions with a cumulative value exceeding USD $31 billion. This achievement demonstrates the robustness of the company’s infrastructure, which serves major enterprises including Uber and Air Peace through its unified API platform.

Addressing the strategic significance of this alliance, Flutterwave CEO Agboola emphasized the company’s dedication to bridging global markets with African commerce. The partnership delivers dual benefits: merchants gain access to American Express’s extensive cardholder network, while consumers enjoy enhanced payment flexibility. This strategic alignment simultaneously strengthens American Express’s African presence and expands transaction capabilities for their Card Members throughout the region.

Briana Wilsey, Vice President and General Manager of Global Network Services EMEA at American Express, characterized the partnership as mutually beneficial, noting its role in expanding payment options while reinforcing American Express’s footprint in Nigerian markets. The integration streamlines payment processing while enhancing operational capabilities for e-commerce businesses utilizing Flutterwave’s services.

The announcement builds upon recent corporate milestones, including securing a Payment Service Provider license in Ghana and expanding operations into Mozambique. Through its comprehensive payment infrastructure spanning 34 African countries, Flutterwave facilitates diverse transaction types, from local and international card payments to mobile wallet transfers.

This strategic partnership marks a significant advancement in African financial technology, positioning Flutterwave as a key innovator in digital commerce solutions. By combining American Express’s global network with Flutterwave’s regional expertise, the collaboration creates new opportunities for business expansion while enhancing consumer payment options across the continent.

The initiative demonstrates Flutterwave’s ongoing commitment to developing Africa’s digital payment infrastructure, establishing new standards for cross-border commerce, and promoting financial inclusion throughout the region. This development represents another step forward in realizing the company’s vision of seamless global-African payment integration, supporting both local business growth and international market access.
